Nicolae Manolescu asserted that «from the fictional point of view, Hasdeu had a precocious geniality». In the beginning, he wrote in Russian. Six decades ago, Elena Dovicenco translated his diary and some autobiographical fragments.
The short story Duduca Mamuca (From the memories of a student), the first Romanian prose of B.P.Hasdeu, is focused on the amazing adventures of the young student with romantic impulses, concerned with the erotic experiences, knowledge experiences after all, apparently a young man with no scruples. He was the author himself, here playing a double role: that of the story-teller, but also that of the main character. The publishing of the short story created a huge fuss in his time, serving as weapon to those who didn't hesitate to accuse the author of immorality. The plans of Toderita N.N., student in Harkov, to seduce the daughter of his host before throwing her in the arms of baron R. are followed to the closest details.
As the conquest succeeded surprisingly rapidly, the student «arranged» that the girl’s mother surprised her daughter in the middle of a love scene with the ugly baron to whom she had been pushed by Toderita. The marriage between the young girl and the baron took place immediately, to the satisfaction of the student, but also of his host, who had been also seduced by the frivolous Toderita.
Another version of the short story was published later, under the title The Little Girl.
B.P. Hasdeu’s literary work written after 1888 can be regarded as a painful scream of revolt, of helplessness, it was armor and, at the same time, a weapon turned against those whom he was attempting to obloquy. For instance, towards the doctors, priests and lawyers, in the story Devil’s Men. He considered that „Happiness vanished from the world”, „not through Adam’s woman, but through the doctor and the priest”. We can understand the reasons that made him regard these two professional categories this way. The members of the first one had been, in his opinion, accomplices to his child’s death, and the priests regarded with doubt the scholar’s passion for spiritualism.
B.P. Hasdeu also stigmatized himself by writing The Story of the Lily , indirectly denouncing the claims towards his daughter in her short existence. According to his confession, the story was shaped in his mind in the last two days of Julia’s agony. „Being neither a boy, nor a girl ”, Lilia or Crin could not live. The king’s daughter was asked to live like a man. The doctors found the solution: she should be beheaded and her head to be replaced with a boy's. As the young girl died, the king punished the guilty doctors the same way, replacing their heads with a „wolf’s, owl’s or ox’s head, with a dog’s, a cat’s, a snake’s, and the most often with a donkey’s head”, and on the animals’ bodies were placed the doctors’ heads. „Since then has been lasting the species of nowadays doctors, in which only the body is human, and the head – an animal ”.
